When things are at there worst its inevitable for many of us to think that we have no choice but to live this way. And as long as we think that, nothing will change.
When apathy and cynicism become the default, we take shelter under a cloak of despair and hopelessness. It's bad enough that this is how some people come to live their lives, but what's worse is that these same people actively enlist others to join in on their despair.
Martin Luther King may have said it best:
