Imagine the student who is in our class and is constantly distracted by the real world.
If only they knew how important that top down mandated, prefabricated, content-bloated curriculum that we are responsible for dispensing truly is.
If only they would focus on what they are told to do.
If only they would stop distracting others from doing what they are told to do.
If only they would stop asking questions that derail our laminated lesson plans.
If only they would sit still.
If only they would be a little less... human.

ReplyDeleteI think Einstein said "It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education." Who are these people who are creating the content-bloated curriculum, if not former education professionals? Sadly, I think it is intelligent, but misguided fellows like the retired professor John from your interview on "The Current" yesterday who inhibit true progress in Education. He has a lot of supporters, too, because I think many parents grew up in a certain system and think it was "good enough" for them, so why change it? I don't understand how they can NOT know just how lousy and mind-numbing the curriculum is?!
ReplyDeleteI remember what it was like to be in school - it was boring beyond description, and felt like a place-holder for when "real life" could begin. I say this as an excellent student who did well by the school system's standards, but by the end of grade 12 all love of learning had been sucked out of me.
I see the same thing happening to many children now, and it's even worse than it was 20 years ago because there seems to be this idea that the more content you stuff into a school year, the smarter the kids will be. When the kids seem disengaged, people are quick to blame electronics/gadgets/media; in reality, children are disengaged because they are treated like robots who are expected to store information, as opposed to actual people who need to interact with their learning environment. An overhaul of the education system is long overdue - so keep up the good work.

Well, a dollop of mind numbing mainstream media hooked into the kids' brains with intravenous-like hand held electronic devices ought to quell any intellectual resistance and stem any natural curiosity...and hey kids, if you collect enough points for "behaving" you can have a movie day & candy!
